What else wants to leak..?

Remember that time I said that at least it was just the basement that was leaking? Oh, and remember when our inspector told us that we would probably have 5 years before needing to replace the roof? Well pretty much as soon as we finished waterproofing the basement, we walked into our extra closet on the first floor off the dining room and innocently looked up....only to find water stains. Was this there before? Unfortunately, we didn't think so... So it was back to Home Advisor and finding some roofers that would be able to take a look at the issue A.S.A.P.

We had a few different companies come by, but as usual it was so tough to nail down (ha, get it?) any of the smaller more local companies, so we ended up going with a bigger company. The consensus was pretty much the same for all of them: the roof (the whole thing...) needed to be replaced. When we looked at it, we thought "hey! this looks fine!". But we knew nothing, Jon Snow. Turns out, the roof was far from fine. There was basically no ventilation for the rising hot air to escape since our attic was finished. Also, there was a large amount of plant life and lichens growing on our roof, which means that there was water present (not good for a roof). So once again, with the help of our families and our savings, we decided that the roof needed to be replaced completely.

How is this the only picture I have from this whole process? Anyway, there are the roofers hard at work!
Thankfully, the work only took about a week, and it would have been shorter had it not been for a crazy thunderstorm that happened while the roofers were still up there! The roofers were great and toiled through the heat and the elements, with only a few mishaps (including kinda maiming our rosebush and having a pulley swing through our foyer windowpane...). We chose a nice dark blue roof shingle, which we thought went well with the current weird off yellow color of the house (we hope to change this down the road....like way down). They also added extra ventilation, new flashing and some other elements so that we will hopefully NEVER have to replace the roof again. And the company had a lifetime guarantee, so thats good!

Once the roof was done and we finished picking up all the gigantic nails that had fallen into the lawn, we patched up the drywall in the closet, and were ready to return to the basement project. Our goal was to get the plumbing fixed (you'll remember this included some corroded pipes, a cracked sewage pipe (ew), fixing some of the baseboard heating, and possibly replacing the water heater). Easy, right?

Perhaps you'll notice that my last post was in June and it is now January....that's because it has taken us THIS LONG to find a plumber and contractor who will come by and start the work we requested...this definitely took a bit of a toll on our morale, which is why it took me a good 7 months to write this post! But also, we got married in September (yay!) and went on our Honeymoon to Italy right after (bravo!), so I was a bit busy with all that good stuff. And then it was Thanksgiving. And then the Holidays...you get the idea.

But here we are, end of January, and we're getting back on the horse! I'll be back soon (I promise!) with more about what's going on with the basement, as well as some fun other little projects I've accomplished since then!

It's good to be back.

The finished product! Ahhhhhh :-)
